(1798) Tobago Countermark on a Cayenne Two Sous. Vlack 439. Rarity-5. Fine to Very Fine, a large TB countermarked on a 1789-A Cayenne Two Sous which is struck in brass and unlisted in that metal in the Vlack book, though a few examples are known – the host coin likely a contemporary counterfeit made in Birmingham – while it may seem unlikely that a coin crossed the ocean to be countermarked, Vlack does list two Birmingham counterfeit Sous Marques also known as host coins. Tobago had the most extensive series of countermarks, and seems to have single handedly taken care of the problem of excess Cayenne coinage, as the Two Sous was the preferred host coin. There are a few major types of Tobago countermarks, a TB as offered here, a TB in a rectangular frame with a small “o” (perhaps a ring or annulet) at the base, and a TB without the frame and the small “o” added above, below, or both. Vlack lists the TB variations first, though it was not the first countermark to be made.
