(1798) Tobago Countermark on a Cayenne Two Sous. Vlack 439 type, but Unlisted with a crude annulet added above the TB countermark. Rarity-7 as such. Very Fine, the peripheral legend of the host coin strong, the centers weaker from the countermark, though the last digit of the date is there, enough to show that the host coin was dated 1789. Medium brown with darker toning, minimal circulation marks. A fascinating coin, this started as the regular type of Vlack 439, but a crude (and way too large) annulet has been added above the middle of the TB countermark, ostensibly turning it into the type illustrated as Vlack 447. This was almost certainly a contemporary addition to the coin, as both marks have aged and worn the same. Its purpose is unknown, though it’s possible that after the TB countermarks gave way to the “TB with o” marks that the former were not being accepted in trade – and some enterprising individual made a minor addition and was able to spend the coin. The host coin is genuine, the original countermark is genuine, the added annulet is assuredly not – so one wonders what to call such a thing! From the Edward Roehrs collection.
