(1801) Nevis Countermark. Vlack 407 type, but UNLISTED on a blank copper planchet. Rarity-8 as such. The same NEVIS mark in a prepared oblong punch as found on the Vlack 407 type, here on a blank, somewhat brassy looking copper planchet. As with the Montserrat countermark on a blank planchet offered above the existence of such a piece is not unexpected – when the supply of earlier small coins was exhausted and money was needed, blank planchets would work just as well with an official countermark. Indeed, the Nevis countermark is also known on a Crowned C Stampee, the 1749 Birmingham forgery Sous Marques, and Spanish silver issues, showing that any small coin that made it to the island would be considered suitable for countermarking! Unknown to Vlack, Pridmore and other early researchers, and of extreme rarity. This example was in the amazing collection of West Indies coinages formed by Edward Roehrs, sold by the British auction firm Dix Noonan Webb.
