Canadian Countermark - G.W (George Ward) within rectangular cartouche on obv. of Bank of Upper Canada penny, 1854, Br 719 (M.I. 986).

This is similar to the mark illustrated in Langdon, and is likely that of George Ward, Toronto jeweller and medallist from 1859-1882. He was responsible for some of the Ontario Agricultural and Arts Association medals (Ler. 1462). [Willey’s Dictionary, op. cit.]. (Marked Impressions).
