Circa 1779 French Colonies Stampee, Birmingham Forgery Struck on a 1749-A Sous Marques. Vlack 376. Rarity-3. Very Fine, the surfaces dark and lightly rough, a rather common occurrence on coins that circulated in island climates. This is a fascinating issue; a die struck forgery of a 1749-A Sous Marques, but with the Crowned C “countermark” actually part of the die itself, not stamped on after the coin was struck. The Birmingham, England area was the epicenter of counterfeiting in England, and are known to have not only struck pieces of their own country (mostly copper coins), but also of Spain, France and other European nations. Vlack suggests that these particular issues were not struck as counterfeits to deceive people in the French Colonies, but rather for use in the British Colonies of the area that needed small change and which had to use the French coinage since England rarely sent any small coin to its island possessions. A fascinating coinage – Birmingham also produced a similar type that was dated 1769, a good half decade after the Sous Marques coinage had actually ended!
