Betts-Unlisted. Breton-4. 35.8mm 16.5g. Plain edge. Signed BRETON. Hercule Breton was a medallist at the Paris Mint during the latter part of Louis XIV’s reign. This is the smallest size known for the 1693 Dynastic medal, though 31mm has been reported in the past. Others exist in 75mm, 60mm, and 41mm. The different variants may have been awarded to Indigenous chiefs according to status. Few of any type survive in silver. Most have been lost through attrition, either by melting, burial, or in exchange for British, American, or Canadian peace medals as allegiances shifted. Small-size medals are no less important than their larger counterparts, and although this example lacks a hanger, it exhibits considerable evidence of handling consistent with an awarded Indian peace medal.
Violet-grey patina covers well-worn surfaces. Several edge marks are noted. The Adams example sold in 2009 was described as Choice Uncirculated and though struck from the same dies was likely a later impression than the example offered here. An unpublished variety not present in the Ford holdings.
Ex: Purchased from a European collection circa 2005.
From the Michael Joffre Collection of Canadian Historical Medals.
