Betts-76. Breton-6. 41.4mm. 31.3g. Plain edge. Signed I. MAUGER. A glossy, rich chocolate-brown example of this small-size Dynastic medal. Both sides feature minor planchet imperfections, but the semiprooflike surfaces are essentially void of friction. Struck with rounded rims typical of the period. A noticeable rim break occurs at 3:30 on the reverse. Betts-76 has long been collected as part of the Indian peace medal and Canadian series. However, numismatist David Fanning presents a strong argument that these medals were produced not for diplomatic purposes, but rather to celebrate the birth of Charles, Duc de Berry. They were likely struck circa 1691 to 1693 and served as the inspiration for the 1693 Dynastic medals, which were, in fact, given out to the Indigenous peoples of North America. A comparable Choice Uncirculated example sold recently as part of the Donald G. Partrick Collection (Heritage, 3/2021), realizing $1,260 USD.
From the Michael Joffre Collection of Canadian Historical Medals.
