McLachlan-168, Breton-115. 41mm. 32.6g. Plain edge. Signed C.F. CARTER. From R.W. McLachlan’s Canadian Numismatics (1886): “Mr. Davidson was for many years President of the Bank of Montreal, but having been offered the position of Manager of the Bank of Scotland, he resigned his position in Montreal and has since resided, in Edinburgh, Scotland. He still continues his annual gift of this medal in gold to the High School, Montreal. When the Protestant Board of School Commissioners was organized, the High School was handed over to their control by the Governors of McGill College. The same dies with the College arms are retained for the medal given under the Commissioners.” Each side is brilliant copper-orange with only slight mellowing. Great contrast between the glossy fields and high-relief devices.
From the Michael Joffre Collection of Canadian Historical Medals.
