McLachlan-162, Breton-118. 45mm. 60.0g. Plain edge. Signed J.S. & A.B. WYON. The Anna Molson gold medal was presented to the top student in mathematics and physical sciences. Mrs. Molson’s husband, John Molson, was a brother of the issuer of the 1837 Molson token. These medals are rare in any metallic composition, but especially in gold. Many have been melted over the past 150 years. The last appearance of a gold Molson medal (as of 10/21) was a 53.07g example sold by Heritage in January 2021. It realized $3,600 USD or roughly $4,680 CDN. This exceptionally well-preserved survivor exhibits razor-sharp detail and profound yellow-gold colour with splashes of natural reddish accents from the copper alloy. Deeply contrasted. Hairlines are scant, and there are no edge or test marks. XRF analysis determined a purity of 20K (84.49% Au, 15.51% Ag).
