The type of this regional issue imitated the elusive and short-lived regal quinzains (15 deniers) of 1641 that followed the countermarking of 1640 (i.e. Dup. 1344, Gad. 22, KM 116). This issue itself is somewhat scarce. This variety, with the obverse legend "GAST . FR . VN . REG . VSV . FR . PR . DOMB" (more typical of 1643 than 1644-dated pieces), a crescent initial mark and an apparent S over 8 in "DNS" on the reverse, is that of the exceedingly rare Divo 187 (Jean-Paul Divo, Numiusamtique de Dombes, 2004). Divo knew of just a single specimen. Since his work, at least two others have surfaced (see http://monnaiesdeladombes.blogspot.ca/2009/07/gaston-dorleans-1627-1650.html). A rare piece, and a bold VF -- unfortunately the flan is cracked.

This is a part of the Richard Cooper Collection.
