A - Paris Mint - Undated (1738-56)-A Billon Sous Marques. Vlack variety unknown. Rarity-8 Very Fine or so, a FULL REVERSE BROCKAGE, produced when a previously struck coin adhered to the obverse die, its reverse acting as a pseudo die when another planchet was struck, giving an incuse reverse on what would have been the obverse side, while the reverse side was struck normally. Both the date and mintmark are on the obverse die for this series, so neither are present on this reverse brockage, but we know it is from the Paris mint because of the fox different at the base of the reverse, and we know it must have been struck prior to 1757 because in that year the mark was changed to a heron. Light silver color, the surfaces with a very light dusting of roughness, not bad at all; a few letters are weaker on either side, a result of the error strike itself and not of excessive wear. An exceedingly rare error in the series, only a few have been traced for the entire series; the only ones we remember seeing at auction are the Vlack coin (Lot 5058) which was also a Paris Mint reverse brockage (at $632.50) and the Ford coin which was described as an unknown mint but from Lyon based on the different (at $1,150). An important piece to start off our run of this fascinating series.
