Host Coin of Dombes, Vlack Unlisted Type - 1640 countermark on 1587 [Treboux Mint] Dombes Douzain of Francois II de Bourbon-Montpensier, Divo Dombes 68. Fine to Very Fine, a few areas slightly weak, but overall all there, and on a nice large planchet free of clipping, which allows for full legends on the obverse and nearly all on the reverse; the date also all visible, the last two digits sharper than the first two. Good design detail, the “F” to the right of the obverse shield bold, the one to the left weaker; the countermark is on the obverse, Medium gray, with some green spots on the obverse that are likely removable. Light circulation marks, nothing unexpected for the grade. After the death of Louis II the land and titles went to his son, Francois, who continued his father’s fight against the Huguenots. When Henri III passed away Francois, a staunch Roman Catholic faced a tough decision. He could either align himself with the Catholic League and support their choice of Charles X as king, or side with his cousin, Henri IV. Family won out, a choice that likely allowed the Dombes region to remain in Bourbon hands. While not quite as rare as the Louis II issues, the number of 1640 countermarks known on Francois II coins can likely be counted on two hands – with few duplicates of date or design type known.
