Host Coin of Henri II (ruled 1547-1559), Vlack 1g Type - 1640 countermark on a 1550-“9” [Rennes Mint] Henri II Douzain aux Croissants, Ciani 1305, Duplessy 997, Sombart 4380. Choice Extremely Fine, a simply unheard-of grade level for a countermarked douzain, and one of the nicest known for ANY host coin. Boldly struck, as expected for this grade, the legends are bold save for a few stray letters, the design detail razor sharp, and on a nice, large and fully round planchet. The countermark is applied on the reverse, in an area where it only affects one arm of the cross, leaving the rest of the design visible. Gorgeous antiqued pewter color, with ample traces of original silver around the peripheries and some of the details, and without any major marks from circulation. For an issue that was made to circulate – and wasn’t pursued by contemporary collectors – a coin in this condition is special indeed. While one can seldom be too picky about conditions in the earlier French Colonies every now and then a choice specimen does appear; this is the nicest host coin that this collector was able to obtain over several decades of collecting.
