Host Coin of Henri II (ruled 1547-1559), Vlack 1g Type - 1640 countermark on a 1552-I [Grenoble Mint] Henri II Douzain du Dauphine aux Croissants, second type, Ciani 1310, Duplessy 1001, Sombart 4384. Nearly Very Fine, the peripheral legend full, the design detail sharp save for the expected flattening at the area opposite the countermark on the reverse. A distinct type in the series, the design altered so that the shield on the obverse shows a dolphin in the upper right and lower left corners and a group of three fleur-de-lys in the opposite corners, while the reverse features a crowned dolphin alternating with a large H in each quadrant of the cross. While the “I” mintmark is usually associated with the Limoges Mint, Sombart notes that Grenoble used it for this issue (along with a stylized “3,” an “L” and at least one die without any mintmark at all). Quite unusual in the series, and certainly a piece for the specialist.
