Host Coin of Henri III (ruled 1574-1589), Vlack 1i Type - 1640 countermark on a 1577-“9” [Rennes Mint] Henri III Douzain aux Deux H, 1st type, Ciani 1450, Duplessy 1140, Sombart 4398. Very Fine, well struck, the planchet oddly shaped, cut this way before the coin was struck. The legends are full, the date and mintmark both strong, and with good design detail. The countermark is on the obverse. Beginning with the Henri III douzains collectors have the possibility of delving deep into date/mintmark combinations for hose coins, and the Sombart reference is invaluable for these. This is a rare mint for a host coin, Rennes struck this type only in 1576 and 1577 and produced some of the smallest mintages for those years; Sombart traced only 6 examples of this date/mint in the collections he viewed, so the number extant with a 1640 countermark must be small indeed.
