Host Coin of Henri III (ruled 1574-1589), Vlack 1i Type - 1640 countermark on a 1577-C [St-Lo Mint] Henri III Douzain aux Deux H, 1st type, Ciani 1450, Duplessy 1140, Sombart 4398. Very Fine/Fine, the obverse stronger than the reverse. The legends are mostly full on the obverse, a little weaker on the reverse, though the last two digits of the date and the “C” mintmark on the obverse are both visible. A most interesting specimen, this is a genuine coin, but the countermark applied to the obverse is not, and is a contemporary counterfeit mark, applied to the host to allow it to circulate at the higher valuation in North America! It is not surprising to see individuals taking the opportunity to get free money – the French crown was doing the exact same thing. The series offers a delightful mix of genuine and counterfeit coins, with genuine and counterfeit marks as well – another variation for the collector to pursue. An extremely rare host coin, Sombart was not able to find a single example of this date/mint in the collections he viewed.
