Host Coin of Henri III (ruled 1574-1589), Vlack 1i Type - 1640 countermark on a 1587-R [Sainte-Andre de Villeneuve-les-Avignon Mint] Henri III Douzain aux Deux H, 3rd type, Ciani Unlisted, Duplessy 1142, Sombart 4402. Fine or so, the planchet clipped down a bit, affecting some of the letters in the legend, though thankfully both the mintmark and most of the date are visible – this detail important because this is an extremely rare host coin, one that had a mintage of just 7,140 pieces and which Sombart lists as “existence possible,” meaning that he had not seen an example in any of the collections he viewed. The countermark is on the obverse, and the coin is a nicely toned silvery hue, with just a few light planchet cracks and few marks from actual circulation. Given the extreme rarity of the host coin, it is almost certainly unique with the 1640 countermark, and a rare opportunity for the specialist.
