Host Coin of Clement VIII, Struck at Carpentras, Vlack 1n Type - 1640 countermark on a 1593 [Carpentras Mint] Papal Douzain of Clement VIII, Berman 1528, letter A in obverse shield, SILSABELLVS reverse legend, rose and lions in fields of reverse cross. Nearly Very Fine, weaker at the left side of the coin, but at least half the legend visible on either side, including the reverse legend which quickly identifies the type, struck for just two years, 1593-4; the last two digits of the date are weak but visible at the top reverse. Differentiated from the Avignon issues listed above by large C’s at either side of the obverse shield, standing for Carpentras. The fleur-de-lys countermark is on the obverse. A rarer type coin, and about as well-struck as the Carpentras issues tend to come. Very rare with a 1640 countermark – Vlack listed the entire Carpentras host coin issue as Rarity-7, though he did not go into the different type of host coins within each issue. A definitive look at the billon papal coinage has yet to be written, as there are distinct varieties within the series that are grouped under similar types – one notable area to examine is the obverse shield, which usually has a single letter at its base – A, O, and T are known, and though their purpose is unknown it is possibly the initial for the engraver of that die; all three of these initials are offered in this collection.
