Host Coin of Henri IV (ruled 1590-1610), Vlack 1k Type - 1640 countermark on a 1593-K [Bordeaux Mint] Henri IV Douzain aux Deux H Couronnes, 1st type, Ciani 1560, Duplessy 1253, Sombart 4432. Nearly Very Fine, the legends mostly sharp, including the mintmark, the date a bit weak at the last digit though it is clearly a 3 (this type was struck only from 1590-4); the countermark on the reverse. Nice lighter silver color, a few marks from circulation but none distracting. A distinct type in the series, the somewhat plain cross found on the reverse of the earlier issues is now much more elegant, with three fronds at each arm and a diamond shaped center. Bordeaux struck the type in 1591-3 only, and never with more than 100,000 pieces. This is the most available date and mint for the type, and Sombart was able to locate all of 9 specimens; far fewer likely exist with the 1640 countermark.
