Host Coin of Charles X (proclaimed King 1589-1590), Vlack 1j Type - 1640 countermark on a 1593-T [Nantes Mint] Charles X Douzain aux Deux C, 3rd type, Ciani Unlisted, Duplessy 1181b, Sombart 4412. Nearly Very Fine, an extremely rare and distinct type in the series, the royal titles are on the reverse (cross side), instead of the obverse! Well struck, the legends mostly strong, as is the important date on the reverse – this showing pronounced doubling. The countermark is at the center of the obverse. Lightly toned, a few light edge splits as struck, but with nice eye appeal. This curious type was likely an engraving error since it was only struck at the Nantes mint, and only in two years, 1593 and four years later in 1597, whereas if it was an official design change one would expect more mints to have struck it. Regardless of its status, it is an extremely rare type within the series, and Sombart was able to find just three examples of each date – likely making this example unique with a 1640 countermark!
