Host Coin of Henri IV (ruled 1590-1610), Vlack 1k Type - 1640 countermark on a 1593 circle with dot [Maringues Mint] Henri IV Douzain aux Deux H Couronnes, 3rd type, Ciani 1562, Duplessy 1254, Sombart 4436. Very Fine, very well struck, the legends and date all strong, the curious mintmark of a circle with a dot inside is also sharp. The countermark applied on the reverse. While the color appears somewhat coppery in hand, it is actually billon that has toned down to this hue (though it may be a lower fineness than the French Crown authorized for billon – minters were known to increase their profits by decreasing the amount of silver in their coins!). No recorded mintage for this year, but the host coin must be considered quite rare – Sombart found only one example of this year (and just one from this mint for 1592, the only other year Maringues struck the type).
