Host Coin of Henri IV (ruled 1590-1610), Vlack 1k Type - 1640 countermark on a 1593 key [Le Lauzet Mint] Henri IV Douzain aux Deux H, 5th type, Ciani Unlisted, Duplessy 1240, Sombart 4426. Fine or so, weakly struck at the centers, the peripheral legends about 2/3 complete on either side. Fortunately the strongest areas include the date and the all-important and unusual mintmark that is shaped like a key, after the date on the reverse side. Medium silver, some darker toning and light marks from circulation. The present example is also UNLISTED with a major legend error – the engraver lost count of the ordinals for the King and engraved them as IIIII instead of IIII! He apparently noticed his error and tried to cover it up by placing a dot on top on the last ordinal – which of course did nothing to hide the mistake. An extremely rare type, this was struck for just one year, and just at this mint, and with no recorded mintage. The line drawing in Sombart has the correct number of ordinals, so this must be considered a rarer die variety of an already rare coin – the number that also exist with a 1640 countermark may well be just this example!
