Host Coin of Henri IV (ruled 1590-1610), Vlack 1k Type - 1640 countermark on a 1594 “&” [Aix-en-Provence] Henri IV Douzain of a COMPLETELY UNLISTED TYPE in Ciani, Duplessy and Sombart. Fine or so, the peripheral legends mostly strong, design details somewhat weak but visible. Mottled gold and darker colors, a few light marks and edge splits, the countermark applied to the reverse. What makes this host coin interesting is that it is of a previously unknown type! The date is clearly on the obverse (shield side), which is the type that has three fleur-de-lys in the shield and an H on either side of the shield. That arrangement is only known on Sombart 4422 – but that type has the legend on the shield side reading SIT NOMEN DNI BENEDICT, whereas on this coin it appears as HENRI IIII DG FRAN ET NAVA REX. This alone would give the coin its own unique number in Sombart if it had been known to him when he wrote his book. The placement of the legends is the same as on Sombart 4418, the 1st type of douzain, but that issue has the date on the reverse (cross side). The coin itself appears genuine (i.e. not a contemporary counterfeit), and the countermark is also genuine – making for something very special indeed. A coin worthy of further research and, needless to say, likely unique with a 1640 countermark.
