Host Coin of Henri IV (ruled 1590-1610), Vlack 1k Type - 1640 countermark on a 1594 to 1596-R [Sainte-Andre de Villeneuve-les-Avignon Mint] Henri IV Douzain aux Deux H, 2nd type. Ciani 1563, Duplessy 1247, Sombart 4420. Fine to Very Fine, clipped which affects about half of the legends on either side, but the rest of them are strong, including the mintmark; this is important since it narrows down the possible dates to 1594-6, the only years that this mint struck this design type. Medium silver gray, nice hard surfaces and a minimum of marks. While this collection usually included only host coins that could be identified by date and mintmark, exceptions were made for unusual types – and this piece qualifies as such, because it shows TWO 1640 COUNTERMARKS, one applied on each side, from two different punches. A very rare occurrence within the series, especially so on opposite sides of the coin! The fact that two different punches were used means it wasn’t simply someone accidentally stamping the same coin twice at the same time but rather two different mints countermarking the coin at two different times!
