Host Coin of Albert & Isabel, for Brabant under Spain, Vlack 1o Type - 1640 countermark on a 1598-1621 Spanish Netherlands 5 Patards of Albert & Isabel for Brabant, likely struck at Antwerp Mint. Fine or better, the obverse (shield side) stronger. The host coin is a rare and UNLISTED type with a 1640 countermark, struck in a lower fineness silver that would have been more valuable than the 15 Deniers the piece would have circulated at with the mark! The obverse is strong, with the legend mostly full including most of ALBERT and ELISABETH; the position of the latter word matching up only to this denomination and design type. The reverse is weaker, with a hint of the central design visible and about half the legend, including BRAB for Brabant. The mintmark at the base of the obverse is somewhat weak but matches up closest to the hand design used by the Antwerp mint. The countermark is on the reverse, and quite strong. Light silver color, with some green spots on either side, likely removable. While issued at slightly under 3 grains of silver, the bullion value of this piece would have exceeded that of the typical billon douzain type used as host coins for 1640 countermarks. This is the only example of a 1640 countermark on this type of host coin that has been reported, and is likely unique as such. Worthy of a strong bid by the specialist!
