Host Coin of Clement VIII, Struck at Avignon, Vlack 1m Type - 1640 countermark on a 1598 [Avignon Mint] Papal Douzain of Clement VIII, Berman 1516, no letters in obverse shield, Jerusalem cross and lions on reverse. Fine/Very Fine, the reverse sharper than the obverse, mainly due to the countermark being on the reverse and slightly flattening the other side. On a slightly larger planchet than normally found, allowing for the intricate design at the top of the obverse shield to be visible, though only traces of the peripheral legends are on the planchet on that side. The reverse has most of the legends visible, the tops of some letters off the planchet. Nice silvery gray, with mottled darker hues mostly on the obverse, this color looking far more like the expected billon. This particular piece was originally described as a 1598/7/6 triple overdate, but is likely a 1598/7 with the top of the 8 showing the squared off top of the 7 beneath it, and with some light touch up work done in the date area.
