Host Coin of Clement VIII, Struck at Carpentras, Vlack 1n Type - 1640 countermark on a 1598 [Carpentras Mint] Papal Douzain of Clement VIII, Berman 1528, letter T in obverse shield, SILSABELLVS reverse legend, rose and lions in fields of reverse cross. Very Fine, a bit weaker around the peripheries, but stronger at the centers. Roughly one-third of the obverse and half the reverse legend visible, though often weakly, including part of the final digit of the date. The central designs are sharp, as is the countermark here applied close to the edge on the reverse. A lighter silvery gray, suggesting a more proper billon alloy, with much of the original silvering still visible on either side. The ones with “T” in the shield appear to be the rarest of the three letters. The present example is from the Robert A. Vlack collection, and comes in his distinct typewritten envelope.
