Host Coin of Clement VIII, Struck at Avignon, Vlack 1m Type - 1640 countermark on a 1600 [Avignon Mint] Papal Douzain of Clement VIII, Berman 1518, no letters in obverse shield, Jerusalem cross and lions on reverse, date moved to the obverse. Nearly Very Fine, somewhat erratically struck, but on a larger planchet which has some light edge splits. This allows more of the legend to be visible on either side than usual, including the last two digits of the date, which was moved to the obverse for this design type. The central details are especially sharp, despite the countermark being applied twice on the reverse, the first time very faintly then moved slightly to one side and struck again with more force. Gunmetal gray, the silver ratio higher than that found on the more coppery appearing specimens. Quite pleasing for this turn of the century year – which was proclaimed a jubilee and saw some 3 million pilgrims visiting holy places.
