Host Coin of Clement VIII, Struck at Avignon, Vlack 1m Type - 1640 countermark on a 1601 [Avignon Mint] Papal Douzain of Clement VIII, Berman 1518, no letters in obverse shield, Jerusalem cross and lions on reverse. Fine, some details sharper. Also struck on a larger planchet than normal, with about ¾ of the legends fully on the planchet, unusual as such; the date is all visible at the upper left obverse, with a diebreak through it. Decent design detail, the countermark applied to the reverse, which causes some flattening of the obverse shield. Mottled light gray, the billon content appearing to be as expected. While Pope Clement VIII lived until 1605, this is the latest year that has been seen for a countermarked papal douzain, and ends a remarkable run of dated issues from this mint – but another mint also issued douzains for this Pope, which are listed next.
