Host Coin of Louis XIII (ruled 1610-1643), Vlack Unlisted Type - 1640 countermark on a 1621-1629 [Nimes Mint] Douzain of Louis XIII, Ciani Unlisted, Duplessy 1343, host coin of his type of 1341c, but an UNLISTED reverse design style. Very Fine, well struck, save for a few letters on either side, the weak area unfortunately hitting the final two digits of the date. The rest of the legends are strong, and the design details are sharp. There is no mintmark beneath the obverse shield, so it is of the Duplessy 1341c obverse type, for the Nimes Mint – but the reverse style is notably different, with a much smaller cross that has the alternating crowns and fleur-de-lys much more tightly fit into the arms of the cross. We have searched through dozens of photos of Louis XIII douzains and have not found a single coin that matches this “small cross” reverse style – it is undoubtedly extremely rare, and with a 1640 countermark may well be unique.
