Host Coin of Louis XIII (ruled 1610-1643), Vlack Unlisted Type - 1640 countermark on a 1628 [Nimes Mint] Douzain of Louis XIII, Ciani Unlisted, Duplessy 1343, host coin of his type of 1341c. Nearly Very Fine, weak at the upper left obverse and corresponding area of the reverse, which fortunately does not include the date, which is bold here; the weakness partially due to the countermark which is applied to the reverse. The rest of the legends are sharp, and the design detail is especially strong. This is the same general type as the above piece, with the exception of there being no mintmark beneath the shield on the obverse, and this is attributed to the Nimes Mint. Pewter gray, the surfaces mostly hard and showing a hint of the original silvering in the protected areas of the reverse design. This subvariety is listed in Duplessy with only this date, and is quite rare with the 1640 countermark!
