Host Coin of Charles VIII (ruled 1483-1497), Vlack 1d Type - 1640 countermark on a Charles VIII Grand Blanc a la Soleil, Ciani 803, Duplessy 584. Struck 1483. Fine or so, the reverse weaker than the obverse. The central design details are sharp and much of the obvers legend is visible. The countermark is on the obverse, the fleur-de-lys of the mark at an angle overlapping one on the host coin. An extremely rare host, Vlack listed the Charles VIII issues as “to date none reported” – yet the present offering contains three from this ruler, all on very different types of host coins, showing the variety that exists even in extremely rare issues.
