Host Coin of Francois I (ruled 1515-1547), Vlack 1f Type - 1640 countermark on a Francois I Grand Blanc de Bretagne, Ciani 1164, Duplessy 854, Sombart Unlisted. Second type, struck 1522. Host coin and countermark both Very Fine, a very nice grade level for such an early issue. The obverse features a crowned shield flanked by crowned fleur-de-lys. As usual, the dies were slightly larger than the planchet, but about three-quarters of the legends are visible on either side, more than normally found for the type. Medium golden hue, the countermark applied at the center reverse, and overall quite attractive. Curiously unlisted in Sombart, though the host coin itself is not that rare in normal form; with the 1640 countermark it is decidedly so.
