Host Coin of Henri IV (ruled 1590-1610), Vlack 1k Type - Host Coin of Henri IV (ruled 1590-1610), Vlack 1k Type-1640 countermark on an unknown date with 0 and dot mintmark [Clermont Mint] Douzain aux Deux H Couronnes, 3rd type, Ciani 1562, Duplessy 1254, Sombart 4436. Fine or nearly there, really an impossible coin to grade since it is struck on a wafer-thin and poorly made planchet, incorrectly annealed and resulting in the right quarter of the piece breaking off, likely prior to or during the striking process; the broken area taking the last two digits of the date, though Clermont struck this type from 1591-4 only (and its distinct mintmark of a dot within a circle is visible). Both sides of the piece show planchet cracks from the improper annealing process, and the piece could easily be snapped into several pieces! The countermark, which is genuine, is lightly impressed on the reverse – whoever stamped it likely worried that if he struck it too hard the coin would shatter! An interesting and rare error within the 1640 countermarked series!
