1644 Quinzain of Dombes. Divo Dombes 188, Gadoury Unlisted, Poey d’Avant 5190, Breen Unlisted. Very Fine or so, stuck on a clipped planchet that affects some of the obverse legend, though the reverse one is stronger and the date is sharp. Good design detail on both sides, the crowned shield sharp, as are the G’s to either side, and the “countermark” design at the top is all there. The reverse is similarly strong, the arms of the cross full, and the “countermark” at the center sharp. Mottled hues of light and darker silver, as well as some golden russet tones, the surfaces with a light roughness but no real post-strike damage. The 1644 quinzain is rarer than the 1643 issue, and was completely unknown to Vlack, who at least mentioned the 1643 issue. We have been able to trace just a single public auction appearance for the 1644 issue in recent decades, in Stack’s January, 1998 sale where one was hammered down at $1210 (US), a strong price in an era where there were few collectors of the series; we offered one in 2017 as part of the Richard Cooper collection – even though not specifically made for Canada the design similarity was enough for him to include it in his collection of French issues for North America. We do note that at least two examples of this date have been found in older Canadian collections, though we are not aware of any being found in archaeological context.
