1692 (likely)-Crowned S [Troyes Mint] Recoined Sol de 15 Deniers, Gadoury 93. Fine or so, struck over an earlier douzain with the 1640 countermark, here visible at the center obverse. Very weak at the left obverse and corresponding part of the reverse, so that the date and legend there is not visible, the mintmark sharper, and the rest of the legends on either side strong. Light green toning to the surfaces, looking like an ancient bronze coin, and the patina is quite attractive. The piece is likely dated 1692, which had a higher mintage than the 1693 issue (which had 17,210 struck that year, reportedly only on virgin planchet stock), and these are the only two years that the Crowned-S mintmark was used. The Crowned S was likely confused at the time with the regular S mintmark used for Reims (see above), and in 1693 Troyes switched to a “V” mintmark, though it apparently only struck the Sol denomination for just one year, 1695, with that mintmark (offered below). The Troyes mint is UNLISTED in Gadoury for being overstruck on a host coin with the 1640 countermark for either the 1692 or 1693 date, though it is listed overstruck on douzains without the 1640 countermark. Any example with this mintmark is difficult to find.
