1693-A [Paris Mint] Recoined Sol de 15 Deniers, Gadoury 92. Fine or so, weakly overstruck on an earlier douzain of Francois I, with more of that coin visible on the reverse than the Sol overstrike! The legends of the Sol are about ¾ visible, while the undertype’s legends peek through on both sides. The date is sharp, the mintmark is not visible, but the mint is certain because of the horseshoe shaped different visible on the lower obverse (compare with the following lot). Remarkably round for being struck twice, the original coin larger than the dies for the recoined piece. Light grey with some green spots on either side which may be removable. An amazing overstrike, enough of the undertype remains to easily attribute the piece as a Francois I douzain a la Croisette, which was struck in 1541 – meaning the piece had been in circulation for 150 years before being recoined and given a new lease on life! One of the earliest host coins for a recoined sol known, quite important. This is also the rarest of the Gadoury types, since many of the recoined issues do not have enough of the host coin visible to identify them to ruler.
