1693-A [Paris Mint] Sol de 15 Deniers, Gadoury 91. About Uncirculated, an amazing grade level for one of these. Struck on a virgin planchet (flan neuf), nearly perfectly round as such. Boldly struck, as expected for the grade, the final two digits of the date weaker than the rest but all visible, and the design details all sharp. Lovley lightly toned silver, a piece that likely never entered circulation but was set aside by a 17th century collector and taken care of by others ever since. While the 1693-A issue had the largest mintage for the year, and the second largest for the entire series, few likely survive in this condition. This is also an UNLISTED legend error, the word LUD on the reverse here spelled LND, an amazing error on a regal issue, and likely one that was noticed early on and the die either corrected or pulled from the press. We have records of just one other example with this reverse error, in much lower grade. An important piece for the specialist, especially desirable so choice!
