1693-L [Bayonne Mint] Sol de 15 Deniers, Gadoury 91. Fine, probably VF or better in terms of wear, the planchet not nice enough for the higher grade. Struck on a virgin planchet, which is the only type listed for this mint and year in Gadoury. The legends mostly all there, the date and mintmark strong, and with good design detail. Mottled darker gold hues, the planchet with a light roughness to it, as well as a small edge split. The condition is almost moot as Bayonne is consistently one of the rarest mints in any of the French coinage series, with one of the lowest mintages, worst survival rates (this is especially true in the Sous Marques series offered later in this sale), and low grades for those that did survive. The location of Bayonne in the extreme southwest corner of France, close to the border with Spain, meant that it was one of the furthest mints from Paris, which likely limited the number of dies and blank planchets sent – which meant the coins that were in the area stayed there and circulated heavily. Gadoury lists Bayonne as striking this denomination only in 1693 and 1695, making it one of the rarer pieces for the collector assembling a set by mint as well.
