1693-Y [Bourges Mint] Recoined Sol de 15 Deniers, Gadoury 93. Very Fine, overstruck on an earlier douzain that has the 1640 countermark, here visible at the very left edge of the reverse. The coin initially appears to be weakly struck, but upon examination much of the weakness is actually due to extreme die failure on both sides; the dies have both broken and swollen, the “weak” areas actually raised above most of the struck portions. While some of the legend has been lost, it isn’t much, and luckily the last two digits of the date are sharp, and the mintmark is weaker but visible on the reverse, making attribution certain. Bourges is another rare mint, which Gadoury lists as only striking this denomination in 1693 and then, after a long wait, again in 1701 (though an unlisted 1694 is offered later in this auction); its mintage was the third lowest of 1693. This is also UNLISTED in Gadoury as being overstruck on a host with the 1640 countermark; in earlier editions the date and mint was listed as only being on virgin planchets, but in the recent edition a recoined version was added under Gadoury 91 – but which must be considered extremely rare since it was the only mint for the year that was unpriced in any grade! Clearly even rarer on a douzain with the 1640 countermark, and an important coin for the specialist.
