1694-H [La Rochelle Mint] Recoined Sol de 15 Deniers, Gadoury 91. Very Fine, overstruck on another earlier, large coin that is not a French douzain – this one struck over a Spanish Netherlands ¼ Patagon of Brabant – a previously unknown host for this series! The host coin is again larger than the dies for the Sol, and the reverse of the host coin is quite strong under the obverse of the Sol; the other side has the reverse of the Sol strong and only traces of the Brabant piece. The Recoined Sol is very bold at the central areas, the legends a bit weaker because of the ovetrstriking, but the final digit of the date is visible (and since there were only struck 1692-1701 and again in 1702, 3 and 5, anything that ends in a 4 must be 1694. The mintmark is bold. Gadoury lists this date and mint under his 93 category which are pieces overstruck on earlier, larger douzains, and this certainly qualifies as a much larger host coin, even if it isn’t a French one! Gadoury does not have any mintage figures for the date and mint, but if the total output was on these larger host coins and douzains with 1640 countermark (where it is also listed), the number was likely quite small. Another amazing piece, one of just a few Recoined Sols known struck over something other than a French douzain, and likely UNIQUE over a Spanish Netherlands host coin of this type. Needless to say, an opportunity the specialist would do well to take advantage of!
