1696-E [Tours Mint] Recoined Sol de 15 Deniers, Gadoury 93. Very Fine, overstruck on a larger with a 1640 countermark, here visible on the obverse. Well struck, the legends of the Sol are strong everywhere save the middle left edge where the undertype’s legends are stronger, the date and mintmark are both bold. Medium gray planchet, large enough that much of the host coin’s legend is visible, and with a couple edge cracks. When the 1640 countermark was first stamped into the douzain host coin it was done with such force that one corner of it actually went through the coin, creating a hole just below the center obverse, the fleur-de-lys stamp directly underneath. A neat error, the whole overstruck with new dies a half century later and the hole in the coin apparently had no impact on its circulation! UNLISTED in Gadoury as coming overstruck on a host coin with the 1640 countermark, but it is listed by him as being overstruck on a larger, earlier douzain (his type 92), though without any mintage figure. Interestingly, the Tours mint must have had a large supply of old douzains, as the only year Gadoury lists this mint striking pieces on virgin planchets is 1693, and in that year it overstruck douzains as well!
