1715-BB Sol of 16 Deniers. Very Fine or nearly there, well struck on the typical somewhat grainy planchet, here with a few small edge chips, but with the legends all there, sharp enough design detail and a bold date. This is the final year of issue, and was struck after a hiatus when no coins of this denomination were made in 1713 or 1714; interestingly it was struck AFTER the death of King Louis XIV, perhaps to use up any remaining billon planchets that were still on hand at the Strasbourg Mint. Gadoury notes that it was issued in December of 1715, at the further increased value of 20 Deniers (though the XVI denomination is still at either side of the obverse shield) and that “few examples have survived.” In his own work Droulers stated that this date was “reported, but not confirmed.” It is an extremely rare issue – the key coin in the 16 Deniers series, and priced at more than double the other issues in Gadoury. We have found no auction records for this date at all, and it is a piece of prime importance.
