1720-A [Paris Mint] John Law Half Sol. Choice Very Fine, slightly double struck, most apparent in the legends on either side. Nice design detail as expected for the grade, everything sharp, and with lovely medium brown surfaces without appreciable marks from circulation. Gadoury calls this date and mint common, but Smith notes just 2 examples out of the 255 of the denomination studied for his census, so it is likely far rarer than Gadoury suggests; indeed, he does see, to regard all Paris issues as common, despite the fact that they did mint some extreme rarities. Paris was busier with silver and gold coinage during the Law years, and most of the copper coins were struck at other mints. The 1720 date is always popular because John Law was in power the entire year – and was in Paris where this particular example was struck.
