1720-S [Reims Mint] John Law Sol. Choice Very Fine, boldly struck, with the legends, date, mintmark all mostly sharp (the last few letters on the obverse weaker than the rest but all there), and excellent design detail for the grade. Medium brown, the surfaces with a little light roughness, but few marks from circulation, and quite attractive. Reims issued more Sols than any other mint, and 1720 was its banner year – made more interesting by a change of engravers halfway through that year, resulting in two major types, along with an extremely rare overdate and a variety with a major obverse legend error (both offered below). In 1719 and early 1720 the engraver was Pierre LaHaye, and the present coin was struck from his dies, which show a diamond different before the date on the reverse. Both this and the other major type, offered in the following lot, are the most commonly seen Sols, with Smith noting 43 and 41 examples respectively in his survey. The 2 in the date on this particular reverse die appears to have been made using an upside down 7 punch, the upper curve of the 2 added by hand.
