N – Montpellier Mint - 1739-N Billon Sous Marques. Vlack 149 type. Rarity-1 for the year, rarer than that as a subtype unlisted by Vlack with the mintmark reversed and a date with a diebreak at the second digit which makes that number look like a 4 that is leaning sideways a little, the whole date appearing to be 1439. Very Fine, mostly well struck, a few letters weaker than their neighbors, but everything is visible, the design details sharp for the grade. The reverse is in a late die state, with a heavy break from the rim to the tops of DG and the F following, with die swelling in that area as well. The planchet appears to be more copper than billon, and the overall crudeness would make one suspect the piece was a contemporary counterfeit – but the Montpellier engravers seem to have produced poor quality dies that often broke (or had major mistakes, as in the following lot). The Ford collection had a similar piece, though not from the same dies, which was catalogued as a 1749/39 overdate; those in the audience considered it to be a 1739 piece with a diebreak through the date – and that one also had the mintmark reversed as well. An interesting specimen, worthy of further study!
