X – Amiens Mint - 1739-X Billon Sous Marques. Vlack 213. Rarity-7 for the variety, Rarity-8 as a major error coin. This is the Bob Vlack example, which appeared as Lot 5135 in the sale of his collection where it was described as follows: “Fine. Besides being an example of a rare date/mint combination this is also a flip over double struck error coin, the reverse showing light shift doubling and the reverse a partial incused impression from the reverse of another sou that must have been stuck in the press when the present piece was being coined. Pale gray-brown, some flan problems, and a bit rough.” The description makes it clear, but oddly doesn’t state, that the coin started life as a reverse brockage. This being the case it is more likely that the brockage error was noticed, the coin purposely fed back into the press and struck again in an effort to make the coin usable in commerce. We would grade the piece higher than Fine, the areas of weakness on the reverse are due to the brockage and second strike, and not to wear. The legends full save for LUD on the reverse, where the brockage remains of DG FR are bold. An extremely rare error in the series, made even better by being on a rare variety. Accompanied by Vlack’s original typed envelope and the lot ticket from the sale of his collection.
