1767-A French Colonies Copper Sou. Vlack 14-E, another, but countermarked with an UNLISTED mark on the reverse. Very Fine, well struck with everything sharp on the obverse, the center slightly flattened due to the countermark on the reverse. While the 1767-A issues are known with the usual RF countermark allowing them to circulate at an increased value in Guadeloupe, the present coin has a countermark reading A.D in an unusual shaped lozenge on the reverse, and is unique as such – indeed, we have never seen this countermark on any coin other than this. Light brown, some darker toning on either side, but an attractive example for the grade, made much more interesting due to the countermark. This coin is from the collection of Mike Ringo, who acquired it from the collection of Mendell Peterson who was a curator at the Smithsonian Institution, and the man who pretty much invented underwater archaeology; it is accompanied by Ringo’s original annotated envelope. A coin with a story to tell – some research may well lead to an interesting article!
