1789-A Cayenne Two Sous. Vlack 393 type, but an UNLISTED PIEDFORT STRIKE. Rarity-8 as such. Extremely Fine or better, a boldly struck example on a planchet that is double the thickness of the usual Cayenne issues, the coin clearly produced with some intent as something special. This is a fascinating coin for many reasons. The die work is different than the other known examples of this date – which can be easily seen as the onion-shaped crown that is wildly tilted to the left while the different at the top reverse is tilted to the right. While these are unusual in this series, the legends on either side are well-made, and the punches appear to match those used on known genuine Paris Mint issues, taking out the possibility of this being a contemporary counterfeit. Of course making a piedfort strike of a counterfeit would make no sense either since the value of the metal in a piedfort would erase any profit made from making a countefeit! There was an example of this die pair in the Vlack sale, Lot 5455, a coin that was counterstamped “EH,” but the style of the piece was not noted as anything unusual in the auction or on Vlack’s envelope, suggesting he too thought it a legitimate Paris Mint product. This particular coin was noticed as something special though, and graced the cabinets of two incredible North American coin collectors. It was part of the Virgil Brand collection, and later in the Emery May Norweb collection (whose Canadian coins were sold at auction by both Bowers and Merena and Christie’s). One of the most important pieces in this section of the collection, a coin that is worthy of being added to any advanced collection or museum!
