(1795-1811) Montserrat countermark. Vlack 405 type, but UNLISTED struck over an earlier douzain that also has a 1640 fleur-de-lys countermark! Rarity-8, UNIQUE to our knowledge. An incredible coin, a completely unexpected host for a Montserrat issue, and one that was likely in circulation for over 200 years before making its final journey to this island! Very little remains of the legend and detail of the host coin, most of that on the uncountermarked side, where an outline of the central cross design can be seen. The fleur-de-lys countermark is bold on the opposite side, and the Montserrat “M” countermark is on that side as well. The vast majority of these earlier douzains were turned into the Recoined Sols – but the presence of one in Montserrat suggests that perhaps many of those that did not get recoined could have eventually found their way to France’s offshore colonies. The present coin is likely unique – we have seen no reference anywhere to another. From the Mike Ringo collection, accompanied by his original envelope.
